From One Small Class to the Astraeus Institute: Astronomy and Space Research at the University of Florida
Sarah Coates, CA, is the University Archivist at the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida. As University Archivist, she is UF’s history keeper and storyteller, saving and sharing the history of UF. She has worked at the University of Florida’s University Archives since 2018, becoming University Archivist in 2022. Prior to coming to UF, she worked at Oklahoma State University’s Special Collections and University Archives and taught freshman composition at several universities in Ohio and Oklahoma. In addition to her role at UF, she is also the archivist for the Chiefland Astronomy Heritage Museum. She holds a Master’s in Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma and a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in English Literature from Wright State University. She is also a Certified Archivist through the Academy of Certified Archivists.
Abstract:
The University of Florida's astronomy heritage dates back as far as 1905, with one small general astronomy class offered to the 60 students enrolled at the University. This presentation will explore the beginnings of astronomy education and research with the earliest classes at UF, to the establishment of the campus observatory in the 50s, NASA grants in the 60s, and the discoveries and projects UF became known for from the Space Race to now. There will be time to play a game of "Stump the Archivist" with a Q&A session.
