7:30 - Public Presentation

Speaker:  Ann Finkbeiner

Topic:  Multi-Messenger Astronomy

Synopsis:

The sky we see with our eyes -- the optical wavelengths -- is only a fraction of the sky that's shining at all wavelengths.  It's as though listening to a symphony, we could hear only the violins.  Astronomers have slowly, gradually, over the decades created the technologies to see in all the wavelengths, from gamma to radio, and now that they've detected gravitational waves, can come close to hearing the whole orchestra.

About the Speaker:

Ann Finkbeiner is a freelance science writer who usually covers astronomy and cosmology, but has a side specialty in science advising and the science of national security.  She lives in Baltimore, MD, and likes to hang out at the Space Telescope Science Institute.
