Event: A Public Program by the Alachua Astronomy Club, Inc.

Speaker: Dr. Howard L. Cohen

Emeritus Assoc. Professor of Astronomy

                Department of Astronomy

                University of Florida

Title: Upcoming Gainesville Solar Eclipses & Eye Safety

Summary: Gainesville will have two interesting and fascinating eclipses of the Sun this coming fall and spring (October 14, 2023 and April 8, 2024). These eclipses will be “annular” and “total” respectively for some parts of the USA but unfortunately not Florida. (Learn what these terms mean at this presentation.)

However, Gainesville will have deep partial eclipses for both events. Learn about solar eclipse, what to expect in Gainesville and how to observe them safely. This is a nontechnical talk to acquaint the public not only about solar eclipses but also how to avoid eye damage when viewing the Sun with both the naked eye and optical instruments. Information on how to obtain safe viewing filters will also be available.

A solar viewing session with club telescopes will follow (weather permitting).

About the Speaker: Professor Cohen is a retired faculty member in the University of Florida’s Astronomy Department where he taught astronomy for nearly thirty-six years. However, he has been chasing eclipses for more than sixty years. With his travel agent wife, they have escorted hundreds of people around the world to experience these extraordinary events both on land and on the sea.

Dr. Cohen is also a founding member of the Alachua Astronomy Club and has served the club in various capacities since its earliest beginnings. He was also a major participant in helping the club develop Gainesville’s Royal Park 16 Theater’s astronomical murals that hang over the theater’s concession stand. In addition, he also contributed significantly to the club’s construction of the Gainesville Solar Walk on N.W. 8th Avenue.
